PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
The Functional Literacy Life skills program was launched in January 2025 with the aim of equipping the youths with necessary skills they need for work and life. It is serving several purposes:
Preparation for the Workforce: Functional literacy (reading, writing, and basic math skills) ensures that young people can effectively perform tasks required in most jobs. This includes reading instructions, filling out forms, and communicating effectively. Basic math is also essential for handling finances, measuring, and other work-related tasks.
Self-Sufficiency and Independence: Life skills, such as financial literacy, time management, problem-solving, and communication, equip individuals to make informed decisions and manage daily challenges. These skills help them live independently, make responsible choices, and navigate their personal and professional lives confidently.
Adaptability: The modern world is constantly changing. By teaching these skills, young people learn how to adapt to new situations, think critically, and be resilient in the face of challenges—whether in their personal lives or careers.
Improved Decision-Making: Life skills training focuses on areas like goal setting, decision-making, and managing emotions. These competencies help individuals make thoughtful, informed decisions, avoid risky behaviors, and navigate complex life situations.
Enhanced Social and Communication Skills: The lessons include understanding how to communicate effectively with others, whether in the workplace or in personal relationships. These skills foster teamwork, negotiation, and conflict resolution abilities.
Long-Term Success: By learning functional literacy and life skills early, young people build a strong foundation for future success in both their professional careers and personal lives. These skills are essential not only for finding a job but for thriving in a constantly evolving world.
ULTIMATE GOAL TO BE ACHIEVED BY THE FULL PROJECT
Teaching functional literacy and life skills to young people is contributing to preventing them from leaving the country in search of better opportunities and enhancing their chances of a better future in Kenya. The training not only prepare these young people for work and life but also enhance their ability to contribute to the Kenyan economy and society. By providing them with the tools to thrive locally, we reduce the appeal of leaving the country for better opportunities. Instead, young people can see a brighter future within their own borders, fostering a sense of hope, purpose, and pride in building Kenya’s future.
REACHING THE UNDERSERVED
Learn! Foundation (LF) reaches out to young people in and out of school, colleges, vocational training centres and universities in Kilifi to bridge the knowledge and skill gap. This has been welcomed with joy by the institutions to an extent that the tutors also want to sit in and listen to the life skills which they say they did not get a chance to receive in their youthful years. This program will help build resilience in our youths and coping skills that will enable them transition successfully into the job market as well as start their own businesses after they graduate.
We are currently reaching out to 100 youth aged 19-30
