From Hawker to Highway: The Inspiring Journey of Justus Muthukumi
At just 23 years old, Justus Muthukumi from Kilifi County embodies the power of resilience, hope, and opportunity. Raised by a single mother who took on casual jobs to sustain her family, life was a daily struggle. Education and training often seemed like distant dreams. To ease his mother’s burden, Justus began hawking in the local market to support household expenses, all while holding onto one unwavering vision: becoming a professional driver.
The cost of driving school, however, was far beyond his reach until Justus was enrolled under Youth Care Program, which provides scholarships for vocational training. Seizing this opportunity, he applied with determination and was accepted. Justus quickly distinguished himself among other beneficiaries through his persistence and discipline. He was the first in his group to complete the driving course, often arriving early, staying late, and practicing tirelessly. His commitment deeply impressed Learn! Foundation staff, and with their support, he secured employment as a professional driver.
Today, Justus proudly drives the Mombasa–Malindi route, earning a stable income and supporting his family with dignity. No longer under the scorching sun hawking goods, he now lives the dream he once thought impossible. His story demonstrates how access to opportunity, combined with personal determination, can transform lives and break the cycle of poverty.
Justus’s success is not just an individual achievement—it is proof that investing in youth skills and vocational training builds futures, uplifts families, and strengthens entire communities.
