In Kenya, someone who practices a trade independently is called a fundi. The seamstresses who completed their training at the Giriama Vocational Tailoring Centre last year received a sewing machine in October as start-up capital. We visited some of these fundis and heard their stories! One thing is crystal clear: they are absolutely thrilled with their machines. We also gave them an order to sew 20 school uniforms, and their excitement was indescribable.
This year, we also gave a sewing machine to a young woman, Sophia, who had completed her training through one of our other programs. When we visited her, she told us she was working hard as an apprentice, but her biggest dream was to one day own her own sewing machine so she could work independently. We made that dream come true the very next day—and we also gave her an order to sew 20 school uniforms, just like the other fundis.
