Sokoni Vocational Centre

Sokoni Vocational Centre has many financial challenges.
When we visited the school and spoke with the director (Caleb), we were shocked to hear that he hadn’t received his salary for a month. Sometimes, he even pays exam fees for students out of his own pocket. And that’s not all: there are not enough learning materials. Why isn’t the government helping? We think we know the answer. That’s why we choose to take action.

Why?
Because we see grateful young people who, through education, get a real chance at a better future. Students from our different scholarship groups (Youth Care, AFAS, and Lamento) are studying at this school.

Sokoni VC offers training for:

  • electricians

  • plumbers

  • bricklayers

  • hairdressers

  • tailors

The first two technical courses have the biggest problems. One of our (former) board members decided to support the electrician and plumber programs by buying new learning materials. This is a fantastic start! When we told Caleb during our visit, he was overjoyed.

But the other courses also have serious shortages. The hairdressing and tailoring classes don’t have enough materials either. You can imagine this affects the quality of education. So, we are working on a Sokoni action plan to support the school and “our” students.
