We welcomed Linet Zawadi, a 16-year-old (orphan) girl, to our office in Kilifi. She came to beg for help because she has not been able to go to high school since April 2023 due to a lack of school fees and has no money for the required school supplies.
Linet, who came with her grandmother, had to quit school in April 2023 due to a lack of money. Despite her determination to continue her education, she was unable to return to school in 2023. In January 2024, she applied to Bura Girls, a national girls' school in the coastal region of Kenya. She had to report to school before January 15, 2024, but four months later she is still at home.
Linet and her grandmother decided to walk 48 kilometers to the town of Kilifi (!) to seek help. What perseverance. A young boda-boda (motorcycle taxi), who normally parks near our office, met her crying. When he heard her story, he said, "I know an office where I often wait for my clients. I always see students coming in and out of there. I can take you there and maybe you can get help." That's how Linet and her grandmother came to our office. They were tired and hungry, so we first bought them a meal.
Going to boarding school is expensive because of the additional costs for various necessities (bedding, mattress, mosquito net, school uniforms, sweaters, underwear, sanitary towels, suitcase, shoes, books, bucket and wash basin, toiletries, printing paper, hockey stick, etc.) This is once, but during other trimesters she may need additional supplies or items need to be replaced.
Linet needs 85,544 KES (approx. € 600) to go to boarding school. This covers all costs for the first year. Other years the annual cost is approximately 60,000 KES
Classes at Bura Girls Highschool start on Monday, June 3, 2024 and Linet will definitely go there with your help. So also donate to help girls like Linet get a scholarship. Because with a grant we can change the life of a poor girl and that of her family and her community forever.
